Abstract

A rubber compound is a product obtained by mixing rubber with additive materials before the vulcanization process. A time gap often exists between the compounding and vulcanization processes, making proper storage methods crucial. The presence of vulcanizing agents, activating agents, and accelerators in the compound allows the vulcanization reaction to continue during storage. This research aims to study the influence of time and storage temperature on the vulcanization characteristics of rubber compounds. The rubber composite resulting from the compounding process is stored at different room temperatures, namely 25°C, and 32°C. On the 1st, 3rd, and 5th day of storage, the compounds are tested using a rheometer to obtain vulcanization parameter data. The observed parameters include MH, ML, ts2, tc90, cure rate index (CRI), and effective torque for each treatment. The results show that the storage time of the rubber compound affects each observed parameter. Over a 5-day storage period, prolonged storage time leads to the formation of polysulfide cross-links in the rubber polymer network. Higher storage temperatures also accelerate the vulcanization reaction during the storage period. Increased cross-linking results in longer induction periods and vulcanization times, while the CRI and effective torque values decrease.
