Abstract
Open bonding defect is the most dominant type of defect found in the Assembling process of Adidas Gazelle Bold shoes at PT Tah Sung Hung Brebes. This defect occurs due to bonding failure between the upper and the outsole, which reduces both product quality and production efficiency. Based on March 2025 production data, the open bonding defect rate reached 15,3% which is far above the company’s AQL (Acceptance Quality Limit) standard of 1.5%. This condition indicates the urgent need for process improvement to enhance product quality. This study aims to identify the factors causing open bonding defects and to propose an effective corrective action. The improvement method employed was PDCA (Plan–Do–Check–Action), supported by fishbone diagram analysis. The results of the analysis revealed three main contributing factors: machine factor, related to the universal press pressure not meeting the SOP (Standard Operational Procedure); method factor, related to inconsistent cementing processes and the absence of routine checking; and the human factor occurs because the operator does not follow the specified SOP when applying the adhesive. Among these, the dominant factor was found to be the method factor. The corrective action applied was the implementation of a check list for monitoring cementing SOP compliance, focusing on adhesive application timing and drying temperature. After implementation in April 2025, the open bonding defect rate decreased significantly to 5,1%. This demonstrates a reduction of 10,2% compared to the previous condition. In conclusion, the application of PDCA through the check list for cementing SOP monitoring proved effective in reducing open bonding defects, improving product quality, and increasing production efficiency. This improvement provides a strong basis for further continuous improvement within the company. Keywords: Adidas shoes, assembling, PDCA, cementing, open bonding.
