Abstract
The tanning of goat skin as leather product raw material was conducted in this research. The tanning agent used was mimosa containing polyphenol to reduce the using of chromium in tanning process. Silica-based volcanic ash-silver were attached on the vegetable tanned skin to inhibit the growth of bacteria as a result of the abundance of hydroxyl groups (OH) on it. The results showed that the silica-based volcanic ash layer and its modification using silver increased the inhibition zone of Staphylococcus aureus on leather with inhibition zone area of 21.25±0.50 mm and 24.80±1.64 mm, respectively. This area was larger than the inhibition zone of vegetable tanned skin that was equal to 11.40±0.55 mm.
