Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of adding Retalin NZ on the tensile strength of split cowhide suede leather at PT Sun Lee Jaya. The background of this study was the low tensile strength of suede articles produced by the company, which did not meet the customer’s minimum standard of 11 N/mm². The materials used were six pieces of split wet blue cowhide grade C, which were divided into three treatments: control (without Retalin NZ), trial 1 (1% Retalin NZ), and trial 2 (3% Retalin NZ). The methods applied included a trial method to determine the appropriate formulation and a physical method using a Tensile Strength Tester according to SNI 06-1791-1990 to measure tensile strength. The results showed that the addition of Retalin NZ, especially at a concentration of 3%, significantly increased the tensile strength, reaching 38.56 N/mm² (transverse) and 27.62 N/mm² (longitudinal), exceeding the customer standard. The conclusions of this research were that fiber density and compactness, the amount of oil applied, process control during post-tanning, drying, and mechanical treatment were the factors influencing the tensile strength of split cowhide suede leather. The addition of Retalin NZ was proven to increase the tensile strength of split cowhide suede leather.
